Common Water Leaks & How to Fix Them

Common Water Leaks & How to Fix Them

Water is all around us. About 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, and about 60% of the human body consists of water. Water is also common in your home, but thankfully it’s contained by pipes and plumbing fixtures. When do you experience a water leak in your home, Mike Counsil plumbing is here to solve the problem. Water leaks can occur in your faucets, toilets, water heater, washing machine hose, water lines, and more. Learn more about common water leaks, and contact our team of professional plumbers if any of them happen to you. We’re available 24/7 for emergency plumbing services.

Leaking Faucets

That constantly dripping faucet is enough to annoy just about anyone. What you might not think about is that leaky faucets are wasting water and costing you money. They can also cause rust to form and mold to grow. Leaking faucets can be an easy fix, but that’s not always the case. You can try to turn the pipes below the sink, so the water is off. Next, plug the drain with a rag. Remove the hot and cold handles and then remove the nuts with a wrench. Pull out the stems and replace the seat washers. If this isn’t in your wheelhouse, our team can practically do it in their sleep.

Leaking Toilets

A leaking toilet can cause a real mess and make using the bathroom something you’d rather not do. Toilets sometimes leak from the base. More specifically, leaks often occur near the t-bolts. Those bolts fasten the toilet to the floor and may need to be tightened. The wax ring will need to be replaced, and the toilet will need to be reset before the t-bolts are tightened and the caps are replaced. Water on the floor likely indicates a bad toilet wax ring. The rings usually last 30 years, so if your toilet is newer, something else may be going on. Our team would be happy to diagnose the issue and solve it for you in no time.

Leaking Water Heaters

This issue can waste a lot of money because it’s not cheap to heat water. Leaking water heaters can also contribute to property damage, which is another reason the problem should be addressed immediately upon notice. If the issue is just a leaky water heater valve, it can easily be replaced. When the water heater wall has rusted through, that means you need a new water heater altogether. Today there are more options than ever before, including tankless water heaters, which many homeowners love. Traditional water heaters typically last about eight to 12 years before needing replacement.

Leaking Washing Machine Hoses

In general, washing machines are reliable, sturdy, and durable. The weak link on them is usually their water hose. A cracked or bulging water hose can result in water leaks. These leaks can cost you money and cause mold or rust. Check for a loose hose clamp because you may get lucky and be able to tighten it. The leak could also come from the pump, which can be replaced. The good news is that, in most cases, you won’t need to replace the whole washing machine.

Leaking Water Lines

Your home’s main water line is an unseen hero. Sometimes these water lines break due to factors outside our control. Culprits like tree roots and earthquakes are often to blame. Broken pipes mean water leaks, resulting in poor water quality and little or no water pressure. Water pressure means leaks tend to spray out with considerable force. You won’t be able to fix this problem on your own, so be sure to contact Mike Counsil Plumbing for leaking pipes.
